This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I have thirty-one creative students in my fifth grade class. They are faced with many challenges, but they are so excited to learn and expand their thinking.

Our students come from a low income community with 100% free lunch and breakfast at our site.

Students are able to come to a safe environment at school where they know they will be fed and not go hungry. Our community also has a language barrier and the majority of our students are English learners. We also have a large community of migrant workers where families are forced to move according to where jobs are available.

Though students are faced with these problems, they are so willing to learn. They are so motivated and excited about new projects.

My Project

The supplies I am requesting will make a world of a difference in my classroom! I am requesting 5 stationary bike pedal sets for students to use under their desk. My students are fifth graders, either nine or ten years old. I mention their age, because as educators we often forget that our students are so young. Children are full of energy and need an outlet for this. I know that I am a grown adult and like to be active. When I attend a training where I have to sit all day, it is rather hard for me. So imagine our students!

I am a teacher who believes in active learning, allowing my students to get up, work in groups, move around, and use manipulatives whenever possible.

Though this is true, in fifth grade students do need to work independently at their seats, especially in writing. This is when my students who are high energy struggle.

There are about five students in my class who have very high energy levels. Their energy ends up becoming a distraction, such as tapping their pencils, leaning back/balancing in their chairs, tapping their feet, kicking students underneath desks, getting up to walk around, etc. These behaviors are distracting to the whole class. I know that these students can't help it, this is why I want to learn how to channel their energy. Pedals underneath their desk will allow them to focus their energy, release it, and focus on the task at hand. I especially like how this will not make noise or cause distractions to others. It also is discrete and will not bring attention to the students using them.
