Relaxing Toys for Rest Time

Help me give my students quiet sensory toys like splash pads, liquid timers, and boogie boards to help calm them during rest time.

My Students

My preschool students are energetic, curious, tender-hearted, 4 and 5-year-olds that thrive on learning. They are part of a state-run program called The Great Start Readiness Program that helps children who are considered high risk. Our district also now provides free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch for all elementary students because of the local median income. While helping them overcome, we find ways to help prepare them for kindergarten and help them develop a love for learning that will grow throughout their academic careers.

Walk into our classroom and you will hear music, laughter, and conversations that will fill your heart with joy.

You may also get a bit messy because hands-on​ learning is our thing! We focus on developing literacy, mathematical, and social skills through supported play. In order to maintain an academically rich environment, we have to provide the students with materials that they can explore and manipulate to practice higher thinking skills.

My Project

With students that are 3,4, and 5 years old we need a time for them to calm and rest their bodies. As you can imagine this can be a very difficult hour for a child that may have ADHD, sensory issues, or may be emotionally impaired. With my students being so young they may not be diagnosed with some of these yet, but we still need to find ways to accommodate them.

The sensory shapes, liquid timers, and boogie boards will all be given to my special needs students to use at their rest mat to help them self sooth.

These toys are quiet and will allow the children to have something to occupy them that will not distract the other students around them. They will be able to watch the timers drip to give them a visual of how much longer they have to rest. The squishy colored shapes will give them something to look at and manipulate with their hands to occupy them. Lastly the boogie boards will help their fine motor skills as they write over and over again on them quietly at their mats.
