I am a first through fifth grade Spanish teacher at Community Academy Public Charter School. I work at the flagship campus for this school, which now has four different campuses and focuses on scholarship and community service. Although the majority of our students are struggling with the scholarship component as we try to prepare them to meet testing standards, we have several bright and advanced students who are up for a challenge. I was recently asked to help a dozen such pupils by serving as the teacher for the upper-level fourth and fifth grade reading block every morning from 8:30am to 10:30am. I will be teaching this class in my Spanish classroom. While I have set up a very warm, Spanish-friendly environment, my room is not exactly conducive to an advanced reading group that must spend the first hour of each reading block reviewing and re-reading aspects of difficult novels. That is why I would like them to have a comfortable and inviting place to do this work. I have a bare corner in the back of my classroom that I would like to turn into a reading circle. Since I want students to recognize that reading is a comfortable, enjoyable, and relaxing process, I would like to furnish this area with thirteen beanbag chairs. I think that this will make the students look forward to coming to reading class, and will also provide them with a low-anxiety space to analyze the novels that we will be reading. I also hope it will encourage them to have the type of casual yet intense conversations about the reading selections that I personally had to wait until college to experience. Once again, these students are the best and the brightest at our school. Providing them with a reading circle composed of thirteen beanbag chairs would give them a comfortable place to explore their texts and develop a continuing love of reading. Please help me to give them this invaluable opportunity!
