My Project
Thank you for taking the time to read my page. I am a first year teacher, and my first classroom continues to be a work in progress! My principal kindly ordered a new rug for my second grade classroom, where our class meets every morning. We meet on the rug to discuss our daily agenda, learn new concepts, hold small group meetings, share our daily highs and lows and feelings, and so much more all day long.
However, our classroom is in need of a new rug with muted and neutral colors to help quiet the mind and create a calm environment.
Neutral colors in a classroom also create a warm and welcoming feeling, something student from underserved and low income families may not have at home.
Unfortunately the rug that was sent to us by the school district is quite overstimulating and distracting. The rug has "games that teach" with multiple primary colors, and is predominately red. After the first two weeks of school, I found that my students are easily distracted by this rug, especially one student who is on the Autism Spectrum.
For students with ASD, colors at their full intensity can be over stimulating. In fact, red is often perceived as florescent.
Yellow is also very stimulating and best to avoid. My classroom rug is mostly red with lots of yellow accents.
We also have hard floors and walls that tend to echo when there’s a lot of commotion inside a busy classroom. A rug helps to absorb and buffer the noise and make the room feel quieter and more relaxed. This is also very helpful for me, a sensory sensitive new teacher! Thank you for considering my project!
(Our current rug will be donated to a class that without a student with ASD.)
