Help me give my students an area in my classroom to destress and relax when they are feeling anxious or apprehensive. The comfy accent chairs and bright rug will anchor the area.
I would like to create a space to utilize my existing fidget and sensory collection and give my students a spot to relax and destress when they are feeling anxious. My students are asked to face a number of challenges each day, and many of them not only come from low socio-economic backgrounds but also deal with anxiety or depression issues. This space will give them a spot to come and unwind and put their mental health at the forefront.
In my small rural school, it is tough to be a teen who is "different" and my classes, which include theatre, journalism, and speech, often attract a number of those students who walk to the beat of their own drummer, so to speak.
I have students whose parents do not believe in anxiety medication or therapy, other students whose parents simply cannot afford the time and cost of transportation to doctors and therapists who can help, as we are a considerable distance from an urban area. While a small area in my classroom stocked with gadgets and books and journals may be a drop in the ocean of what these teens need and deserve, it is the drop that very well could make a difference for some of them.
The chairs and rug will make an appealing spot to come and relax, and the cart will give a convenient place to store fidgets, journals, books, and items to help them chill out and get in the right frame of mind to move back into their stressful days. I am eager to give my students a spot they can call their own and use to help keep their anxiety at bay.
