it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I have 60 students who are functioning way below their grade level. Many of their gaps in reading skills go back to first grade. Coupled with the fact that they are academically deficient, many of them experience extreme poverty, hunger, drug environments, parent incarcerations and much more.
They embrace new challenges and persevere to create something original even when all of the materials are unavailable.
These essentials will give each child individual space while saving room for everyone to be comfortable while working. A calming sensory room will build core strength for those who need to work on their physical and gross motor skills. Many students in our school setting with language difficulties, learning disabilities, and emotional disturbances need a safe, quiet environment from time to time to assist in regulating their behavior- mentally, physically, socially, emotionally and academically. Special educational needs come in many forms, but sensory rooms can adapt and cater for a wide range of learning needs and physical requirements.
My Project
The items I selected will be used to create a peaceful safe place for students to regain control over their own emotions. The swing chair will provide a soft place to sit while selecting a sensory object such as a stress ball, fidget magnet, or calming activity to help to refocus their energy. Liquid motion timers will provide students with a visual way to select the appropriate amount of time to calm and return to class with their friends. While the Best Behavior board books will provide students with pictures to model good behavior for students who need deeper pressure to self-regulate.
Teaching children how to keep themselves in control in emotionally charged situations will help them enormously throughout their schooling and lives.
When children feel great frustration, anger, sadness or anxiety, they become confused and may be unsure how to control their emotions. This also provides opportunities for diffusing a negative emotion or situation before it escalates. It is absolutely never a punishment. The goal is that the students learn to use the room regularly and independently as a place for self-regulation when they feel they need to. This practice leads to fewer outbursts and behavioral disruptions.
