it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My position as the Restorative Practice Student Support Facilitator offers me the opportunity to establish on-going relationships with both students and their families as we navigate the complexities of returning to school post-COVID. Students who come to me are often full of anxiety; having access to manipulatives such as playdough and comfortable seating such as bean bags helps to provide a safe and comfortable space.
Simply put, I get to help foster an environment that builds relationships, strives for mutual respect, provides space for open, honest dialogue and decision-making, and encourages individual accountability and responsibility.
I am requesting hands-on stress relievers and comfortable seating so that they will have a safe, calm area to practice reflective techniques. The materials I am requesting with this project will be instrumental in providing a safe and welcoming environment where students will be participating in both Restorative Conferences and Community Circles. For many students, working collaboratively with those they were once in conflict with fosters opportunities for personal growth they may not otherwise have had.
Directly outside of my room is a courtyard; students have expressed the desire to "beautify" that space, and brooms will be essential for that process. Seeing students who were once so angry with each other work towards a common goal is restoration in action.
