Our school serves students grades 7 through 12 and is located one block from City Hall, Civic Students from many areas of The City are identified when they experience difficulty, allowing the focus to be on intervention rather than remediation.
For the most at-risk students, those with habitual truancy, significant behavior issues, and histories of suspension and expulsion, the goal is to change behavior so that these students will stay in school and earn enough credits to graduate. In 2014 we established the first library and are including popular urban lit, graphic novels, and books about the justice system.
Every week on Thursday, the Science classes visit the school library. Students are busy in the library playing with our one chess set. They have asked for more chess games and a Rubik Cube. On Fridays, when the English classes visit the library, students write in the library request book and have asked for a lot of poetry books to learn more about different kinds of poetry (including Hip Hop). For science, they are requesting books about herbs so they can use the plants growing in the school garden. All of the requests show the wide variety of interests and ideas that our students want to explore.
In Their Own Words
MS. H tries to get a lot of books for our library but several students want more especially poetry and garden books. Also we only have one very old chess set in the library. Lots of kids like to relax and play chess. They learn lots of strategies from chess, too. If we get these for the library we will have a lot of great things to read and do! Maria
Ms. H says we can help get the books and games ready for other kids to use in the library. We will "process" the books by adding them to the library catalog. WE can also make displays in the library and make announcements about the new books & games for the whole school. Leon and Maria
The library is quiet and fun. We have bean bags and lots of great books. But students are very interested in poetry and chess and so we need more library books and games. When we get these students will be happy and able to find things they really like. Leon
