My Students

I am surrounded by resilience and creativity every day. My students inspire me. I am the only counselor in a K-5 school so I keep VERY busy. My students are very motivated but many struggle with getting basic needs met at home. 100 percent of them get free lunch and most of my parents work nights or two jobs to make ends meet. In addition, many do not speak English or very limited English and many are refugees. I deal daily with the kind of problems that stem from not getting basic needs met. In the midst of all this, I help children express themselves in ways that help them to build a core sense of self. I learned a long time ago that a young child is likely to be more comfortable initially expressing himself with art than he is going to be at expressing emotions and feelings through words. I stay in at recess and after school trying to keep up with all the needs of my students and after 11 years I still truly love it.

My Project

When I am solving problems, I want to be comfortable and sometimes it is not at a desk. The new chairs and soft rug will provide the students with a different option besides a tiny hard plastic chair. Many students who come to see me are crying, cold, tired, and stressed. They need a soft warm place to talk about what is going on and relax.

Students spend so much time in the classroom and they need to be comfortable for the minutes they spend in my office trying to sort out their feelings and solve problems.

These students are learning that a classroom is not just within the four walls of a classroom. It doesn't have to be a place that is orderly and uncomfortable. Everyone needs a safe haven to rejuvenate and reflect on their feelings and behavior. Help us make a calm and relaxing environment to self reflect.
