This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I teach a 1st grade self-contained special education class in a high poverty, predominantly minority, Title 1 school in New York City. My students face challenges that some of us could never perceive but they are so much more than their circumstances. They are so much more than their disabilities. My students are smart, funny, caring, loving, strong, fearless, energetic, resilient and resourceful. They work hard and love to learn. They go through so many struggles internally and externally yet they persevere despite it all.
My students inspire me every day to be a better teacher and to find a way to provide for them a comfortable and safe academic environment that fosters their creativity, learning, and social/emotional growth.
My students are children who love to laugh and have fun. They are also eager to learn and question just about everything. They love hugs, high fives, and can out dance anyone. They're quick witted and competitive too. My students need a lot of love and understanding and I strive to give them the love and patience they need as well as the best education possible because that is what they truly deserve.
My Project
We currently do not have a rug for the children to sit comfortably. The rug I have chosen has enough squares for each child to have their own spot with room to wiggle. It will be used for whole group and small group instruction as well as a place to lay out, relax and enjoy a good book. This rug is essential to our classroom. It is the heart of our classroom.
It will be a place of comfort for my students where they will learn new concepts, listen to stories read aloud, and participate in discussions.
We also need more books that the children can read themselves. While we have many books we read aloud to the children, our library of leveled books they can read themselves is sparse. My students need lots of practice reading in order to become better readers. They need a range of books they can read without getting frustrated due to difficulty and books that will challenge them as they improve in their reading. My students will be excited and grateful to have a new rug they can sit on comfortably and all new books they can read on their own.
