Students range from 14-18 and many are learning English as a second language. Located in the sunny mission, everyday teen moms and babies come to school. Young women can start at our school while they are expecting and continue after their baby is born. Students continue with their academic education as well as learn parenting skills, healthy baby strategies and useful community resources (including jobs and money management).
Until 2014, there was no library at HHS. Our library includes books and electronic resources for academics and a makerspace as well as pleasure reading.
Our students have very busy lives filled with school, homework, jobs and family responsibilities of caring full-time for an infant! When they come to school, they are eager to learn both academic work, parenting skills and work related skills.
Our students asked to find some comfortable chairs for our small library. They enjoy browsing the books and creating fun projects in the maker space. But now they would like a place to sit, relax, and read, too! Reading in the library will help students both in classwork and in learning English.
We already have a small rug and a cafe table so the students researched and selected some cozy chairs that will match. They are eager to add these chairs so all the students will be more interested in coming to the library & staying awhile to read!
Once we have the chairs and stools these students are committed to keeping this library reading area neat and orderly, too.
In Their Own Words
Lizette-We have a cute green and brown rug in the library with woodland animals. But we don't have anywhere to sit!
Daisy-Once we get some comfortable chairs I think more students will take a break and read even if they don't check out a book. We need chairs that are for teens!
Lizette- We already helped pick out the chairs because we did not want them to be a clashing color with the rug. We will make sure everyone takes care of the new chairs.
Daisy-We will keep the reading space neat. We will tell the other students to keep everything neat, too.
Lizette- Right now students do not spend much time in the library. We have a lot of fun books, like crafts and origami, but nobody takes the time to look at them.
Daisy-We really would really like chairs for teens so they will come to the library more often and enjoy all the great books.
