My Students

Our charter school is a Title I culturally and economically diverse school located on the border of Trenton, NJ. A majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, as well as food for them to bring home to their families over the weekend. For many of our students, English is their second language. They come from homes in which their parents are sometimes unable to help them with homework assignments or school projects because of their limited English proficiency.

Our school is made up of great families that want their children to thrive academically.

Parents choose to send their children to our school because we provide our students with a rigorous curriculum that challenges them while instilling a lifelong love of learning.

My ELA classes are comprised of students of various academic abilities, who come to class willing to work hard and enrich our literature discussions through their own life experiences and connections to the texts.

My Project

In my ELA classroom, I think it is important to make the content I teach more relatable to my students. When students are unable to identify with the material, it's harder for them to gather meaning. As a literature teacher, my goal is to help students empathize with characters, places and concepts, even when those things are different from their own life experiences.

I have worked with my students to develop a list of novels that they are interested in reading.

The top two are part of my project. They feel that these two selections feature culturally diverse characters that have struggled through hardships that they can understand.

These novels will allow for a connection to built that will encourage my students to be tolerant of different point of views, and share their own stories. Providing my students with these novels will help to inspire and make an impact on my students.
