This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Everyone has heard on the news that there is a "new" way to teach math. This new way requires a lot more materials for students to fully understand the concepts being taught. Please help me obtain these materials for my students!
I teach 24 first graders at a Title 1 school in the California Bay Area.
My students are excited about school and they always love to learn something new. Many of them are learning English as a second language. This can be very difficult so I often use manipulatives to help them understand the material.
My Project
I am requesting a class set of rekenreks to help my students fully understand the math concepts that I teach. Rekenreks are like the old abacus that was used in the past. Students are able to manipulate the beads in order to show numbers, add, subtract and understand the different parts that can be used to make a number. In the past I have used a digital rekenrek on the projector screen. Having these rekenreks will allow each child to touch the beads and improve their number sense.
Your donations will help to improve the math experience for each of my students.
They will understand numbers at a much deeper level. This will help in higher grades as they use those numbers to master difficult math concepts. Thank you so much for taking the time to consider my project!
