My Students
I work at a Title I school that has students from various socio-economic backgrounds. 100% of our students receive free breakfast and lunch daily due to the majority of students who need free breakfast and lunch.
I love my students because they try their hardest, no matter what is happening outside of school in their world.
My students love to read, write, and really love a good science project. Their imaginations are vivid and it is so refreshing to be in a classroom with them.
My Project
Our school is focused on math fluency this year across all grades. Number sense starts to click in first grade, but they need to have their hands on manipulative. We have worked on ways to help students gain number sense, and so far my students favorite manipulative is a mini Rekenrek.
We use the mini Rekenreks for a math workshop game, but I would LOVE to be able to get a Rekenrek in every student's hands for whole group math.
I think that they really grow seeing how they can manipulate the beads to create numbers and fact families.
We currently have four mini Rekenreks for math workshop, and a big one that we do math talk with daily. The students really SEE numbers so much better when working with them, I can only imagine having one to use daily would make a world of difference in number sense!
