This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
You can't teach what you don't understand! Like many of us, we learned math in a way that only produced correct or incorrect answers. This past year, our school focus was critical math instruction and it has inspired me to rethink how to teach math.
My students LOVE to come to school and are highly motivated to do all things school!
Our district is in a high poverty neighborhood but with a strong sense of community. I have been teaching here for 15 years and it is wonderful to have so many siblings come through the classes. Our school has a high teacher retention rate which unusual in a high poverty district and the credit goes to the strong leadership at our school. We believe that relationships amongst teachers, staff, administration, students, and parents make a difference.
My Project
I am requesting 20 Rekeneks to help them construct and develop a concrete understanding of number sense.
A rekenek is an arithmetic tool that is used as a visual model so that students develop and construct a concrete understanding of number sense. A rekenek looks like an abacus except that each row has 5 red and 5 white beads. It is used to teach a multitude of mathematical concepts such as adding and subtracting, working with tens, visualizing doubles plus or minus 1 or 2, computational skills and fluency, composing and decomposing numbers, and much more. My students generally work in partnerships in math. The students are carefully paired to complement each other so that they can work and learn together. An important part of the concept is to build a community of collaboration and that engagement in the process is tantamount to the product.
This project will allow for instruction that supports equitable access to all learners.
At the core of this project is the desire to make math instruction and engagement a process that can have many valid solutions by using a tool that helps students visualize numbers from the abstract to the concrete.
