Reken What?! Math supplies for 1st Grade Mathematicians

My students need mathematics supplies such as rekenreks (arithmetic racks), Visualize Math: Write and Wipe boards, and dry erase markers to enhance their development of understanding of mathematical concepts.

My Students

My students are 21st century learners. They love using technology in our classroom and I integrate it as much as possible into all of the subject areas. My students are a bunch of inquisitive learners.

I teach at a small neighborhood school with approximately 560 students.

We first opened our doors in 1950. Arts in education is a major emphasis on our campus. Our school's mission is to develop children into life-long learners as a result of a challenging curriculum, individualized instruction, high expectations, and a nurturing environment with parental and community involvement. My class is made up of 21 diverse students, from students with special needs to those who are identified as gifted and talented. I encourage my students to appreciate each other's differences as well as find similarities among each other. They are very active, creative, and enjoy learning.

My Project

After attending a four day statewide Mathematics Academy for Kindergarten and 1st Grade this summer, I realized I didn't have all of the supplies I needed in order to be effective developing whole number concepts and understanding addition and subtraction with my students.

I learned about tools such as rekenreks (arithmetic racks) to support the natural development of number concepts in children.

I realized how valuable they are in supporting our curriculum providing students with another hands-on tool to use as a visual model for strategic reasoning in mathematics.

I learned about incorporating dot patterns and place value into our daily routine with quick images to build on the concept of subitizing, the ability to recognize a quantity immediately, and conserving numbers, understanding that the number of objects remain the same even when rearranged. This will help my students connect ideas that are building blocks of mathematics throughout elementary school and beyond!

Other materials such as dry erase markers, colored paper, reusable dry erase pockets, write and wipe boards, dice and plastic coins will help provide my class with the supplies needed for whole group, small group teacher facilitated instruction, math centers and individual practice. Some of these supplies will replace lost or worn out supplies I have previously had and others will allow me opportunity to make new games and activities to introduce topics,practice what they have learned, extend their thinking,and reteach when necessary.

This project will allow hands-on experiences to help build a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts for all of my students.
