Reimagining Math Manipulatives for Engagement and Understanding

My Project
Throughout the year there are opportunities for students to practice what we learn in 3rd grade math using helpful manipulatives such as base-ten blocks, Geoboards, dry-erase boards, dice, and plastic counters. In the past, I have been supplementing from my own single income on teacher’s pay for any of the consumable or extra “fun” manipulatives that get students excited. We are currently in the throngs of End of Grade test prep with daily review sessions and many of those activities can feel redundant for the kids.
One way I intend to check for understanding with maximum student engagement is through alternative math manipulatives such as modeling clay, skittles review sessions, randomized questions inside vending machine capsules, and colorful, interactive displays.
Some of these may also be used for language arts, science, and/or social studies lessons that are cross-disciplinary.
If this project is not fully funded I will continue to purchase what I can, when I can, but feel that together we can accomplish much more.
