Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Our school is a Title I campus which means it is a school of high poverty. Many of our parents work multiple jobs to make ends meet. It is a neighborhood school, and most students walk to school. Eighty percent of my students are English Language Learners who struggle with reading and math.
Classrooms which are student-centered are successful.
My goal is to increase engagement in a student-centered classroom to help set up my students for success. I incorporate a variety of learning strategies, projects and options to help meet students where they are and achieve their goals.
My Project
We are re-imagining the classroom this year. First we are looking to add additional flexible seating options in our room. This allows for increased engagement as well as re-configuring the learning space as needed for different learning opportunities, such as small group, presentations, etc. The flexible seating also help students practice and learn how to make decisions which help them be successful students. The games will be used for indoor recess. As cooler temperatures arrive and winter takes hold, we hold recess indoors. We need games to help the students interact in a positive manner while practicing appropriate social interactions.
