Reignite the Spark of Reading in Middle School

Help me give my students a new and exciting novel to read this year, as well as a classic novel, to help me teach the 8th grade ELA standards through stories of social justice.

My Project

I teach 8th grade in a Title I middle school. One of my goals as an ELA teacher is to reignite the spark and increase their love of reading.

“The Insignificant Events in the Life of a Cactus” teaches important lessons of self-worth, accepting the difference of oneself and others, especially as a teenager.

Its portrayal of students with disabilities creates an informative, funny, and supportive book. “The Outsiders” is a classic that also highlights social justice through its portrayal of characters struggling with money and more.

The requested folders will be used for our in class book studies and more. I use the white folders so that each student may uniquely decorate their folder with Sharpies.
