My Project

In our school during and after the COVID-19 pandemic, our students experience anxiety and stress due to the unstable and unpredictable nature of their home environment. Even though school is primarily in person, students are still living with the effects of the stress and anxiety of the pandemic. Many of my students move often for parent employment and/or loss of employment. Many of my students are classified as homeless in that they live with other family members or friends of the family until they can find stable housing.

The stigma of needing mental health help has decreased and become more of a norm, but students may still have reservations about asking an adult permission to attend to their needs.

For example, I have a student whose family is involved in gang activity and live in a drug using, drug selling environment.

This student will often give the persona as a tough student that doesn't need help. When given options to choose an activity to regulate his own breaks, he used it often. He never had to acknowledge his feelings unless he wanted to.

My goal with the regulation zone/calm down corner is to give students the tools to acknowledge and regulate emotions, provide self care and prepare themselves for learning. This goal will require direct instruction before it will be a self serve area with procedures for appropriate usage. The materials I have requested are primarily tools to help decrease strong emotions to a manageable level. I have also included a game that may be used for students who need social interaction to be recharged and ready to learn. It can also be used as a group activity to increase classroom climate. Hand sanitizer will help keep shared items clean.
