Regulation Over Expectation

Help me give my students bean bag chairs, sensory tools, and learning techniques to assist in their ability to self-regulate. The social-emotional books will help the students start to recognize their emotions more.

My Project

I work at a school serving students from a low socio-economic community, where some of our students face a range of disabilities, including trauma, autism, social-emotional challenges, social-pragmatic difficulties, and cognitive delays. The school places a strong emphasis on meeting the therapeutic needs of each student. I collaborate closely with an occupational therapist (OT), and together we've created our group called SPOT (Speech and OT), which focuses on social-emotional regulation, self-advocacy, social communication, and self-acceptance.

Our core belief in SPOT is "regulation before expectation," meaning we prioritize helping students manage their emotions before setting behavioral or academic expectations.

We aim to teach students how to identify their triggers and the strategies that help them regain regulation. Through sensory tools, workbook activities, and reading materials focused on emotions and triggers, we support students in improving their social-emotional regulation.

Empowering students has always been at the heart of SPOT. We recognize that sensory tools are not "one size fits all," so offering a variety of options allows each student to find what works best for them. By fostering open discussions about dysregulation and regulation, we encourage students to become more self-aware and advocate for their needs, both in and outside the classroom. Ultimately, our goal is to help students develop the skills they need to be successful in the classroom and prepare them for a confident transition into college, the workforce, or vocational training in the future.
