Regulating Emotions Through Comfort Items

My Project

Kindergarten is about more than just academics. Children are learning how to socialize with others, work as a team, and most importantly- cope with big feelings without the help of their home adult to guide them. In our classroom, we learn a number of strategies that can help us calm down from a big feeling, such as belly breathing, counting from 1-10, or finding a nice secluded place where we can recenter ourselves. We call our secluded area the reading and calming corner, and I would like to adapt it to what my students at my current school would benefit from.

Our aim is for our calming corner to have calming sensory activities so that students can diffuse their big emotions, then be able to identify what they feel and think about what their next step should be.

My students love Numberblocks. The instant I saw the Numberblocks Sensory bottles, I was inspired to create this project. A fun, but calming, sensory activity would help these students become distracted enough from their anger to help calm them down so that they can properly think about what they can do next. I would also like to rotate a Numberblocks friend at the Calm Corner for comfort purposes. Lastly, my students have expressed an interest in needlework and threading, and this looks like a great idea to calm them down. I also believe that it is a great fine motor activity for my students to do during our centers time to promote strong fingers, which is why I have requested several sets.
