Regulate On! Emotional Regulation Tools for Primary Students

My students need a sensory station that includes items that assist them in self-regulating emotions to allow them the opportunity to remain in the classroom and be present for learning!

My Students

I teach Science and Technology to an amazing school full of kids who love learning and love exploring the world around them. My 300+ students come from a high needs community with nearly 80% receiving free or reduced lunch. Our school is a Title 1 school, but you wouldn't know it when walking into our rooms - these kids are inspiring me every day with their zest for learning and desire to know why things work the way they do. Helping these kids learn and providing them with the best tools possible will give the best kids the best tools and opportunities for pursuing Science and Technology!

My Project

The goal of this project is to prepare students to be ready to learn and maintain a state of self-regulation. Often times when students become overwhelmed, stressed, emotional, or angry in the classroom, the subsequent behavior results in the student leaving the classroom. The requested materials, like stress balls, rainbow glitter wand, elastic bands, fidget cubes, and puzzle cubes will be used to teach emotional regulation, all while allowing the student to remain in the classroom for instruction. My "Regulation Station" will be in the classroom near the teacher. Upon the student being able to self-regulate, the student would then return to the learning at hand in the classroom. Through individualized instruction in the Regulation station, students will incorporate self-regulation strategies that transfer into the classroom.
