My Students

I remember voraciously reading comic books with my older brother, it hooked me into being a life long reader. Graphic novels are needed to "hook" reluctant readers and as a bridge for our scholars new to English.

Our students are in a high poverty urban school in Maryland.

About 97% of our students are considered below the poverty line and receive Free or Reduced Meals (FARMS).

About 20% are coming to us through the refugee center. They have many and varied educational experiences depending on the culture they had to flee from.

We also have a large number of special needs students.

My Project

These books and materials are all high interest low reading so that our newcomers and low readers can get something of interest on their grade level, but can read and enjoy!

Our scholars LOVE books, but need choices that fit their needs.

Your generous donation to our library project will colorfully open up the world of reading to them! One of the keys to helping struggling readers is to provide them with books that they can and want to read. Our selection includes graphic novels and books that have engaging text, short chapters, controlled vocabulary, discussion questions, and online resources. Struggling readers will enjoy reading books about popular topics, such as sports and superheroes.
