Refresh and Relax: Equip Our Yoga Class for Wellness!
Help me give my students fitness equipment wipes to keep their yoga mats and blocks clean, along with lavender eye pillows to help them relax and decompress after class.
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
In their final two years of high school, many of my students feel overwhelmed as they juggle college applications, standardized tests, volunteering, extracurricular activities, learning English, adapting to a new culture, and saving for prom and senior dues. Some even work full-time jobs to support their families.
Most of my students come from immigrant backgrounds and are often the first in their families to pursue college.
They are hardworking and curious, and they deserve a chance to decompress mentally, physically, and emotionally amidst their busy academic lives.
To address this, they have chosen to enroll in a Mindful Movement elective, where they will learn yoga and meditation techniques to help manage their emotions, stress, and anxiety. They have expressed their need for this class, advocating for one another in recognizing the importance of finding ways to cope with their daily challenges.
My students want to deepen their yoga practice and learn the importance of self-care. In our classes, we gather in a circle to emphasize community and acceptance of our unique bodies and abilities. At the end of each session, we relax in savasana, where students can use lavender eye pillows to relieve stress and improve their focus.
However, we face a challenge: our school often cannot provide enough sanitizing wipes for students to clean their mats and blocks after class. By securing these wipes, we can ensure that every student has the opportunity to maintain a clean practice space, fostering a healthy environment for everyone.
Yoga not only calms the mind but also enhances social-emotional learning, including self-awareness and responsible decision-making. With the support of the necessary materials, my students will not only grow in their yoga practice but also build important life skills like mindfulness, community connection, and self-care—elements that are vital for their overall well-being.
