Refocus Attention and Learning through Sensory Hallways

Help me give my students sensory hallways that will allow the transitions between classes to be interactive and fun. Sensory hallways are a great way to add some extra sensory input throughout their long day at school.

My Students

The school I work at is a diverse community, culturally, economically and linguistically. There is over 55% minority from all over the world, speaking over 36 languages. We are a Title I school with high numbers or percentages of children from low-income families. I work specifically with students with a variety of academic, emotional, and behavioral needs.

My students are hardworking, inquisitive and creative.

They are eager to learn and very motivated with goals that we set to better their academic and social skills. Each day I strive to create lessons that are effective, fun, and interesting for my very diverse students. The kids are passionate and very much willing to learn, given all the support and needs.

My Project

For many kids, having to sit still and be quiet through an entire school day can seem like an impossible task. While most schools have physical education and recess built into the day, for some students, it’s simply not enough. A lot of us teachers are becoming more aware of this need and are making changes to help our kids.

Sensory hallways are a great way to add some extra sensory input for fidgeting kids throughout the day.

Sensory hallways allow the transitions between classes to be interactive and fun! I wanted to create some walls with different textures using our Sensory Mini Mats. I want the kids explore, enjoy with their body to release a bit of energy, while still keeping class lines moving.

My project is designed to give students a “brain break,” and path activities that provide sensory input to help stay focus as well. I believe that these sensory hallways are designed as a preventative measure, improving focus and preventing disruptive behaviors from occurring within the classroom environment. After following the sensory path, students can return to the classroom focused and ready to learn.
