Reflective Reading: The Five Essentials of Fiction
My students need 30 copies each of 2 well written books, a heavy duty pencil sharpener and wipe off boards in order to read and reflect their thoughts in writing.
My third graders will be able to connect to the characters in the two novels, My Name is Maria Isabel and Because of Winn Dixie. They will discuss the elements of fiction while reading these books. My students will then be able to reflect their thinking in writing.
My public school has a student population that speaks more than 15 languages other than English.
The vast majority of students come from homes where little or no English is spoken. The students bring their varied cultures and customs to the classroom where we learn a great deal about each other. Games, music, stories and food are some of the things we share.
My Project
Through the reading of these novels, the students will gain a clearer and better understanding of the five aspects of fiction: character, plot, passage of time, conflict and resolution. The students will then reflect on what they have learned in written essays and character studies. In addition, the reading of these and other novels will lead to the students' own original works of fiction.
We need good reading materials in the classroom.
Severe budget cuts will prevent the purchase of any new materials for the coming school year. These novels and materials will lead the students to enhance their love of reading for this year and for many years to come.
