Reflection of Me in My Read: Need Multicultural Literature

My students need multicultural literature that will allow them to connect to their text and to expand their thinking and work with empathy as a global citizen.

My Students

Reading can take you to another world but it can also help you process what is happening in your own life. For this reason, my students engage with novels of their choice, as we delve into units exploring identity and social issues. However, they are limited to the novels I can provide to them

My students come from the south side of Chicago, many who are hoping to live a life that is contrary to what they are told on the streets on a daily basis.

They come to school with the desire to be great. Our school is predominantly African-American students who come from a mixture of backgrounds. This mixture challenges students to embrace the concept of diversity and tolerance. Though students come from a mixture of socioeconomic classes, the ready availability of resources and support is limited. Often students' parents are not home, taking on multiple shifts, so that students can have the experiences they have. As a result, my students love reading and delving into another world where characters are experiencing similar situations or completely foreign circumstances. In the current state of education where achievement is determined by test scores, my students are slowly learning the value of their voice as we engage in literature and open ourselves to be transformed in our writing.

My Project

I am asking for a collection of multicultural literature that can be added to our classroom library. Adolescents "eat up" literature that reflect their own situation or present a story of someone who may externally appear different but experiences similar situations. To have such material available for my students encourage even the most resistant readers to engage in reading. Using the Balanced Literacy Framework, my students engage in novels of their choice rather than having textbooks. This framework allows students to have choice in their reading material and work on their literacy skills at their reading level. I want to be able to provide my students with a plethora of reading material for this reason. Lastly, multicultural literature is critical for our work with social justice themed units we learn literacy through that push students to explore the global society and how they fit into it as a citizen. The texts will engage students in a range of ways as a reader.

I believe that every student deserves an equal education that is well-rounded and empowering.

Engaging in literacy that is interesting pushes our students to be active readers and as a result improves our students as learners. Multicultural literature is necessary for students to feel empowered as they read stories similar to theirs and process how conflicts and situations are interacted with. Further, it expands their minds to think beyond their own race or ethnicity.
