Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My name is Ellis Stephens, and I am an art teacher in East Side San Jose. Our school serves a diverse group of students, many of whom come from marginalized communities. My mission is to provide a safe, supportive, and inspiring environment where students can explore their creativity and build confidence.
Over the summer, while purging and rearranging our classroom to create a more functional and inviting space, our beloved standing mirror broke and cracked.
This mirror has been a staple in our classroom, used by students for self-reflection, art projects, and personal development. The loss of this mirror has been devastating for many of my students who cherished its presence.
We are seeking your support to replace our broken mirror with an upgraded, high-quality standing mirror. This new mirror will not only replace what was lost but will also provide an improved experience for our students. With an upgraded mirror, we can continue to support our students' growth by boosting self-confidence. The mirror is a critical tool for students to observe themselves and develop self-confidence. Whether it's preparing for presentations, practicing speeches, or simply seeing their reflections, the mirror helps students become more self-assured.
In our art class, the mirror is used for self-portraits and other reflective art projects. Students learn to capture their own likeness, improving their artistic skills and gaining a deeper understanding of themselves.
Lastly, the mirror will offer a moment of self-reflection, allowing students to pause, reflect, and center themselves. This is particularly important in our classroom, where we use art for healing and mental health support.
