My Students

Our resources and activities are very limited due to low funds and an overall lack of parent and community support. Located in Old East Durham, North Carolina, we are a Title 1 school with 100% of our students receiving free and reduced lunch. My 2nd grade class of 18 students, love hands-on, exciting and engaging activities and I am finding myself struggling to find the resources and centers to engage my students and push them to the next level. With it being such a low income area, my students are used to recycled activities and games. I would really love to help my students reach their full potential by giving them new math centers with different differentiated activities and hands-on games.

My Project

These materials are going to help my students to grow to their full potential in math skills and literacy concepts. With the book sets, math centers, and literacy games, they will actually get engaged and excited about their learning tools and materials. Our classroom library is sparse and old, with ripped and irrelevant books. I want to replace them with relevant, integrated books, that are interesting for them to read and actually beneficial for their learning. I will use the book sets in read alouds, which I make sure to include every day. We teach math using Singapore methods, so the place value math tools and tens frames will be used to help make concepts more concrete for my lower students.
