This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Twenty-seven students from low-income families...check. Twenty-seven students with reading levels spanning four grades...check. A complete literacy environment to serve them all...unchecked. I am a third grade teacher on the southwest side of Chicago in the Back of the Yards community. The twenty-seven students I teach are a very special and diverse group. Yes they come from low-income families, and yes the majority of them receive free lunch, but that is not why my students are special. My students are special because of their love for learning. For the majority of my students, Spanish is their first language. It is amazing to me how fast and efficient my students have learned English. This fact alone demonstrates their learning commitment. While the oral language of my students is highly developed, their grammar, spelling and writing skills could use a huge boost. Couple this with a wide range of ability levels, and I have quite the classroom situation! In order to foster the development of these essential skills, I have been relying on the use of literacy centers. However, my centers are not complete. I am lacking in specific skill building activities. The Reading Rods Hands-On Literacy Kit would change this. It provides student-centered lessons in word and sentence building prefix & suffix identification and spelling. Having this kit in my classroom would directly benefit the students I aim to serve...and increase their love of learning even more.
