I teach in a small midwestern school which is primarily made up of minority and low income students. Most of these students will never be able to interact with a living saltwater reef. Students currently love the tank I have, but I would love to be able to show them a wider variety of marine life. The donations would go toward a variety of living organisms from Carolina Biological Supply. The sponges and some of the organisms in the set are things I can’t easily find at local saltwater fish stores.
Students who may never be able to visit a saltwater reef will be able to observe a living coral reef. I am looking for living organisms for the tank I currently have. I have used my tank for many class discussions. I have some clown fish and some anemones that I use to discuss symbiotic relationships. We test the water quality and monitor calcium, pH, alkalinity and nitrate levels. The tank allows students to see how animals on a living reef interact and reproduce. Students get a good look at the marine life, and gain a broader understanding of the world around them.
