Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
HHS was the second high school to open in Albuquerque, and we enjoy a rich history on our campus. Our school is an urban school set in Albuquerque, NM. Our student population is extremely diverse, and minority students are a large portion of our campus. Many of our students come from low-income households and the campus provides free breakfast and lunch for all students in attendance.
The band students at our school are truly energetic, hard-working, and full of personality.
They are dedicated enough to show up at early in the morning for marching rehearsal, stay late for evening rehearsal, and spend their weekends at marching competitions, concerts, and parades.
We focus on the importance of being part of a team, responsibility, time management, and working hard to be the best we can. We are so excited to continue to experience growth in the program and plan to keep the momentum going!
My Project
Many musical instruments need consumable items in order to make sound such as valve oil for brass, cork grease for woodwinds, and reeds. Alto saxophones, tenor saxophones, baritone saxophones, soprano clarinets, and bass clarinets all need reeds in order to make their beautiful music. Unfortunately these reeds only last a few weeks (at best) and need to be replaced often..
This project is specifically aimed to help us purchase reeds that will get us through our marching season in the fall and into concert season.
Since our students at Highland are majority low income, it is not necessarily possible for students to purchase their own reeds like they do in other band programs. Our band program strives to provide reeds to students so no student has to worry about having a functioning instrument for rehearsal. Our band students here at Highland are incredibly hard-working and will assuredly put these reeds to good use!
