My Project
I service disadvantaged AAPI students in 10th grade, and many of them are second-generation. The immigrant experience is very real to them; canonical texts don't always resonate in their lives, and many of them don't come from text-rich environments, which is daunting when they come to English class. I use graphic novels as a way to spark discussion and encourage reading, and so far, it's been working very well.
Unfortunately, our first set of this text I'm asking for has gone missing and we desperately need a replacement set.
Students enjoy reading this book, and the situations presented by the main character resonate with them, bringing about rich discussion.
We use this book in conjunction with two other graphic novels, and would like to have this one again!
