Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Many of my students have experienced trauma in their lives and have difficulty coming to school. Our classes serve students with a range of disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, emotional disability like depression, anxiety, ADHD, autism spectrum disorder and specific learning disabilities. The typical student in my class reads at a third grade level and many struggle with basic phonics and number sense. 100% of our students are Latino. The opportunity and achievement gaps are apparent among our student population.
Most of my students need an alternative setting, a nurturing, supportive setting where they can grow and flourish while feeling safe.
My Project
I want to learn yoga in order to bring it into the classroom. I want to bring what I learn in my yoga classes back to the classroom. Yoga teaches non-competitive behavior. Yoga teaches kids that their bodies are different; different bodies do different things and all of them are okay.
Yoga teaches self-acceptance.
In the same way that it provides children an opportunity to learn something that is non-competitive, it also teaches kids to accept and cherish themselves as they are. Again, with society sending so many messages of inadequacy, yoga teaches kids to love themselves. Self-love provides students with high self-esteem which will benefit them in their lives as students and their personal lives.
Yoga teaches students to focus. They learn how the breath can help them throughout the day, in any situation. Learning this skill will help them with behavior as well as focusing in their school work.
I feel that learning yoga to bring it into the classroom will be benefits not only to the teacher to be able to teach better but will help the students learn better.
