Reducing Plastics to Celebrate National Wildlife Day
My students need a "Human Footprint" DVD, books on plastic pollution, canvas tote bags, fabric markers, and animal stencils to encourage less plastic use.
Let's Celebrate National Wildlife Day by decorating a canvas tote bag to use instead of a plastic one. Many animals are negatively impacted by plastic bags in our environment! Let's be part of the solution!
I teach over 500 students in a STEM lab on a weekly rotation.
Our school is located in a rural/industrial area. 98% of our population comes from poverty, but this doesn't dim their spirit! My students love coming to our STEM lab and discovering, creating, testing, and improving. Students are sponges for learning, especially anything having to do with animals and our environment! Who doesn't have a soft heart for animals? When you learn how bad plastic can be for unknowing wildlife, you want to take some action to help protect them!
This project will take place the week of National Wildlife Day, September 4th, if funded.
All first through 5th grade students will participate! That's about 480 students!!!
My Project
I envision 4th and 5th graders watching the DVDs and reading the books on Ocean Pollution and our Human Footprint. Third, second, and first graders will also stencil a canvas tote bag with the fabric markers to take home. The stencils are of many different wildlife animals. They can also write their own "green" messages of encouragement on the totes.
This canvas tote bag can then be used INSTEAD of a plastic one!!
Lots of discussions on responsible use of plastics will be had by all. We will discuss how animals can be harmed by irresponsible littering and discover and list the most dangerous items for ocean animals.
I also have our county recycling manager for schools scheduled for a visit during this week. I want students to go home after our National Wildlife Celebration looking at plastic bottles and bags with "new and open eyes".
I want them thinking about how technology can be helpful and sometime harmful if we are not diligent about looking at all perspectives.
Your donations will be helping 480 students!
Students will be learning about how plastic litter can be dangerous to our wildlife populations. Students will be learning that they can be a responsible user of plastics by reducing, reusing, and recycling whenever possible. I will be able to use the DVDs and books for years to come! YOU will really make a difference for my students!!
Please help us to have an educational learning experience that goes along with celebrating National Wildlife Day!
