This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
According to the National Council for Teachers of Mathematics Standards, students must be presented with math manipulatives to build a conceptual understanding of mathematics. Using manipulatives such as math games and dice will accomplish this by making abstract mathematical ideas concrete. With the right kind of math games, students can see the visual evidence of how math concepts are applied. This will enable them to more readily make connections to solve math problems, using mental math, not paper/pencil.
As a numeracy interventionist, I work with students with a grade span, from kinder to 5th grade who have demonstrated substantial learning challenges in math.
However, they are always excited about learning.
To reduce waste with repeated printing of paper, the materials requested like Zoom!, Zap, Fraction games, and dice will be reused over and over again. Students will also enjoy playing card games over simple worksheets. Card games will keep all my students engaged while building social skills and developing mental math. With continued practice of playing these card games, my students will improve cognitive skills like memory and reasoning.
