Reducing Our Footprint in Jewelry Making

Help me give my students a means to produce alternative forms of jewelry making. Currently, they are using traditional metal equipment to make work, but a 3D printer could help reduce cost, material waste, and emissions.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

As a metalsmithing/jewelry-making teacher for over a decade, I've been accustomed to traditional equipment for this subject: torches, hammers, metal, saws, anvils, etc. Within these tools, however, lie a limitation in creative output, safety, and impacts on the environment. With over 180 students a semester passing through my class, using gas-powered torches, the emissions for shipping, refilling, and using tanks of gas - let alone the other classroom supplies - can take a toll on our planet. I've been exploring other means to include found/recycled materials to interject in projects and have explored more contemporary artists/projects in my class to engage students in thinking beyond the traditional aspects of metalsmithing. With the utilization of a 3D printer and a Wash and Cure Station, we could greatly cut down the cost of supplies and materials that are often expensive, non-important, or both. For example, a 3D printed ring would remove the need for cutting through metal (always a safety concern), using torches to solder a band shut, and then using cleaning chemicals to refine the metal to a wearable state. A fleet of 3D-printed rings that could be customized through software and paints - both at a lower cost than that of traditional metalsmithing techniques - would drastically improve our impact.

By donating to our project, you will be providing endless opportunities for students - not just those in a single class, but multiple years' worth of students - to participate in the process of reducing environmental impacts through the means of art and other creative activities.

Students will be able to realize more unique and personalized designs, without the restrictions of working within the rigid world of sheet metal and torches. Students using traditional tools in tandem with more modern and environmentally conscious equipment would greatly increase their engagement and passion for the arts.
