“Language is the road map of a culture. It tells you where its people come from and where they are going.” –Rita Mae Brown
My students experience life in two cultures and two languages.
Some love learning English while others find it difficult. Some live in supportive homes while others live in unsafe environments. Some receive snack packs because they do not get enough to eat while others eat out on the weekend.
However, the most important part...I have a community of learners that build relationships, show resilience, and model reflection. They persevere daily to become the best humans they can be!
My Project
My school is large. We have around 550 students. Classroom space is limited. In order to have a designated space, my students and I are in the "tree fort." The tree fort is a space in the middle of a hallway that is surrounded by partitions. While the space is small, we make it cozy and productive.
Being in the middle of the hallway creates challenges in many ways and one of those ways is noise.
Throughout the day, as my students are trying to work, they are bombarded with noise from neighboring classrooms. I want my students to have choices in order to maintain focus. I want one choice to be iPod shuffles.
I ask for the iPod shuffles because they are individual noise reducers and focus gainers. Right now, I play music from my phone which adds to the overall noise from the hallway. The kids enjoy the music and it does help but I want them to have their own control and way to focus. They need to be able to focus to gain equal access to their education no matter the setting. They deserve it!
