My Students
When did you first hear about Earth Day? When were you inspired by the 3 R's of waste management: Reduce, reuse, and recycle? My students want to learn how to be stewards of the earth and inspire others to do the same.
I have been teaching for less than 5 years and I am struggling to help my students.
My 19 second graders are great students but they face challenges that no child should have to face. Nine of my students are reading at below primary level. They often cannot remember the names of the letters. Seven students are over 1.5 years below grade level. I have six English Language Learners. Eleven of my students qualify for free and reduced breakfast and lunch. My goal is to inspire these 2nd graders to come to school so they can learn to read so that they can make a better life for themselves and their family. I also want to help them become stewards of the earth. I want them to know that they can make a difference. They are learning about George Washington Carver and how he made the things he needed from the things he had.
My Project
We are learning about African Americans who have changed the world we in which live. My project is to combine the study of life of George Washington Carver and recycling. My struggling readers want to learn more about the earth and what they can do to help the it. They want to help reduce waste. For this project I need reusable water bottles, cloth bags and art supplies. I plan to have students use the water bottles and cloth bags. We will decorate the bags and then make posters so that other people in school will think before they buy plastic single use bottles of water and before they use plastic bags..
My students deserve a chance.
My recycling and reducing project is important to them. This project will help improve the lives of my students and their families. Students will be empowered to make a change. We desperately need the reusable bottles and materials. My school has no funds for this project. Please help me help my students to help the earth.
