Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In 2nd grade at our school, we serve a variety of children who come from a variety of different backgrounds. The students in my classroom all share something in common, they are learning English. Their brains are constantly working hard in two languages and they impress me every day. I want to make the classroom time as enjoyable and enriching as I possibly can to help them become successful people in the future. My students deserve the best our education can offer them. I don't want them to be held back because of their situation or the financial needs of the district and state.

My Project

Have you ever had to sit in a stiff chair for an extended period of time? Well, on a daily basis, students are sitting in hard seats at their desks for the majority of their school day. When I think about how I do work at home, I am always choosing new positions to work in because my body gets tired of the same position. It is no different for the students in my classroom.

Giving students choice in where and in what position they will work will give students more ownership over their learning.

Flexible seating will also give them a better understanding of how they work best which is an important skill for them as they get older and are more responsible for their learning. Wobble chairs would be a great choice for students who still want to work at their desk but have a little movement. The floor seats are great for children because children love to work on the floor. I previously tried flexible seating with six seating choices, but I decided to do some more research. I discovered that flexible seating works best when every student can have a choice of where to sit. I do not have enough options for my kids during work time. I would love to give every student a chance to optimize their learning and take ownership of how they will achieve that learning through flexible seating.
