it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Why should we celebrate Earth Day only once a year? In order to preserve our precious Earth, we need to teach each other to take important steps to be environmentally friendly. Earth Day should be every day!
My classroom is comprised of 20 precious students who come to school eager and excited each and every day despite many of them suffering hunger, severe poverty, and broken homes.
They inspire me every single day! My students have an infectious desire to learn, but simply lack the materials needed to practice the many skills we are learning each and every day. Our inner city school is one of the largest in the state, with almost half the classrooms outside in mobile classrooms. With so many students to reach every day, it is no wonder that our materials are spread thin!
My Project
My class is looking to get serious about reducing, reusing and recycling, but how can we make this happen in our classroom, school and community? My students will each get a reusable water bottle to keep at school and refill with water from the water fountains each day. In one school year, this small act has the potential to eliminate 4,000 plastic water bottles from being thrown away from my classroom alone! I will use the various books as read alouds to educate my students on the importance of the 3 R's as well as composting. The dry erase boards will allow us to eliminate some of the wasteful paper copies we use. They will also become an alternative to exit tickets, morning worksheets, and will allow me to do quick checks on student comprehension throughout the day. I hope to inspire other classes to take the same steps towards being environmentally friendly and impacting our community in a positive way!
With twenty students, our class has the potential to be very wasteful.
With the help of these materials, my students will learn the importance of reducing waste, reusing materials, and recycling what we can in our classroom. These materials will improve our classroom for this year and years to come. As teachers, it is our responsibility to model making positive choices and make sure our students have bright futures. By reducing our impact on the environment, we are doing just that!
