My Students
Each student of mine enters the classroom each day with a challenge, a story to tell, a desire to fulfill, and a chance to learn. No matter what the circumstance of their day brings, I can always count on them to challenge me to lead and to remind me why they are special and deserve the best.
My third grade students represent the heart, soul, and promise of Oakland, California.
Like many children living in poverty, their trials and experiences are the kind we generally hope to reserve for those far beyond their years. Nonetheless, there is not a jaded heart in the room from August to June.
My students get to school on the kindness of extended family and neighbors, including the local bus driver who will check in on the students I haven't seen in a while. Once the students arrive and have had a healthy breakfast, we get down to learning.
My school serves children from West and East Oakland communities. Like many Oakland schools with declining student populations and limited funds, we have real challenges to meet. Supplies are short and staff is shorter! We call on our families and the dedication of the local community to make our school the right place for our children to flourish, learn, and grow into dynamic citizens of the city of Oakland.
My Project
For a diverse group of children from a wide range of backgrounds, recognizing what an environment conducive to learning looks and sounds like can be challenging. Young learners coming from big loud households in big loud cities express themselves in big loud voices that are tough for a teacher to compete with!
Too much valuable instruction time is lost to teacher-student battles over classroom volume. The Yacker Tracker is a unique tool that alerts the entire class when their voice volume begins to tip the decibel scale from constructive to destructive. The Yacker Tracker is an impartial noise monitor that teaches children to self-monitor their own behavior, and it takes subjectivity out of the noise debate.
Rather than try to outshout my kids this year, why not let the Yacker Tracker do the work?
My students need a classroom management stop light so that they can manage their behavior well enough to learn and laminating pouches so their materials last all year!
The potential benefits of a tool like the Yacker Tracker are two-fold.
Any lessening of classroom distraction leads to more time for learning. My kids deserve all the time for learning I can possible afford them.
Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, they may learn self-regulating skills that will help them navigate a world that just doesn't always work like theirs. They will be better able to navigate a university courses, office settings, networking events and more. This is a priceless skill!
