My students need short non-fiction texts, Watching Wildlife: Animal Habitats, Girls Think Of Everything and Chinese Immigrants in America: An Interactive History Advent, to use to teach reading in a small group setting.
How can we expect children to become better readers if we can not keep them interested while teaching them to read? My students need higher level reading material to help them become stronger readers.
My students are very motivated and determined.
They are filled with amazing "out of the box" ideas. However, they live in a small community which often becomes very sheltered.
My school is very diverse, we have students from all over the world. We teach acceptance, tolerance and kindness every day. It is our hope that our students will take these lessons and go back out into the world to make the world a better place for everyone.
My Project
My students need short non-fiction texts, Watching Wildlife: Animal Habitats, Girls Think Of Everything and Chinese Immigrants in America: An Interactive History Advent, to use to teach reading in a small group setting. My students will read these books in a small group with teacher guidance. While reading I will discuss the material they are reading as well as strategies to help them become stronger readers.
All my reading groups are color coded. The red group is starting to loose interest in reading and I am desperate to keep them interested with these new texts. These books match with the material we are studying in Social Studies. During the time we are studying slavery and Underground Railroad I would be able to use the book of short stories about slavery. This connection will help engage the students and help them understand the information they are reading. All of this will, in turn, help them comprehend and remember the information.
My students needs to know that reading is fun and important.
These texts will show them that reading will teach them about the world around them. Books really are a door to the world! I can't wait to help them open that door and read!
