Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Sarah, who is in charge of the project, is a senior who is on her way to Stanford in the fall. She and the rest of the students are an extremely bright, highly motivated, talented group, who come from a lower SES background. The yearbook staff, who are the ones in charge of the project, at our school are not a class. This means that they have to be responsible for their assignments on their own, without the incentive of a grade to push them to meet deadlines.
My Project
The yearbook staff was looking for a way to raise funds. At the same time, we saw the appalling amount of bottles and cans that were being thrown in the trash. We saw an opportunity to kill two birds with one stone. My students need recycling bins for inside the classrooms and outside next to the lunch tables. The students will be responsible for collecting and sorting the bottles and cans on a weekly basis. I will then take them to a recycling center to be redeemed. The students will then keep track of the funds that will be collected. The students will have the opportunity to work on a whole host of skills, including: responsibility, real life problem-solving, money management, teamwork, and environmental stewardship to name a few.
