Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Recycle, reduce, reuse! My students earn their way to science camp by collecting recyclable materials at school. We currently do not have a efficient means to gather the recycling. Unfortunately, many dollars go to the dump in school garbage cans because we do not have recycling containers.
Our school is located in Northern California in a small agricultural community.
We are a public school that receives 90% free or reduced school lunches. With economic times as tough as they are we need every opportunity possible to continue going to a week long science camp every spring.
My Project
Children care about their environment! For the past 2 years my students have raised money for our week long science camp by recycling cans and bottles collected at our school. Our current means of collection is inefficient. Last year the cheap, light weight recycling collection bins were destroyed by the weather. This year we lacked the funds to replace them, and so had no outdoor collections for students to set aside their recyclables. Classrooms collected cans and bottles in class, but lunch and break time goods were thrown into the garbage. Once a week my students collected materials from the classrooms and sort the classroom recyclables, but we know that there is a lot that is missed.
Students take pride raising money for their science camp trip.
We tie our recycling program to the over all lesson at the camp of taking care of nature, and protecting our resources. I know that my students will always remember how they cleaned up their school, and earned money for camp. They become more aware of their responsibilities as care takers for our planet through their role as recyclers and through out their lives!
