My students need an outdoor compost bin plus examples of compostable tableware to educate all students at our school about the benefits of composting, so we reduce our waste.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach science to 1st-8th graders at our school including hosting an environmental club for 4th-8th grade students. We are in an urban, high poverty area - 100% of our families are poverty level. So resources are limited. They are very concerned about waste; yet there, just naturally we have food waste because not all food choices are eaten completely each meal by each student. Also our garden area is poor in soil quality being an urban, high poverty area.
Our club would like to reduce the food waste (in this case veggies and fruit) and help improve our garden soil and plantings. We also want to educate all the students about options to use the leftover fruit and vegetables in a good way...showing students how they make real and positive change in their neighborhood and family. Our students are strong advocates for greening the school; the environmental club was begun because my 4th grade students wanted to do more recycling in the school (which we chose to begin with paper recycling...because of students).
This is a student driven request; which I believe is the most important aspect of this request. My students are energized and only need the resources requested to be responsible citizens by composting our fruit and vegetable waste. They will use the paper plates to teach students and faculty that there are alternatives to plastic tableware.
Your support will help our students feel empowered, as they are actively engaged in learning science and caring for their environment. The experience will build character, teach science and spread excitement for science.
