Recycling- Making Paper

My students need 7 paper vats, dry pulp, masking tape, botanicals to add color, couch sheets to help dry the paper, and papermaking screens and covers.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Shelley's classroom raised $290

This project is fully funded

I teach visual arts in a high school that has over a 50% free lunch population. My class contains a very diverse group of high school students with varying special needs and abilities. My goal is to correlate my curriculum with the science department and foster recycling among my students. We are going to use materials that we have at the school and around the school grounds to make handmade paper.

Our students have been building a rain garden in one class and measuring wind speeds to determine the viability of wind turbines at our school. So I am interested in building on their interest in recycling by purchasing the basic materials that we can use for years and years to make paper from used paper, and objects found at school.

We will use the paper pulp as a basis to add our recycled paper to give the paper a thick background that will easily accept botanicals, yarn, threads, etc. We need the frames and deckles to ensure that our paper is even and has a clear edge. The vats will be used to add the paper pulp, recycled paper, botanicals and water so the students can set up stations to make a variety of colored and textured papers. The couching paper will be used to ensure that the paper is blotted completely so it will dry evenly, and the plastic cloths are to protect the tables and materials from the excess moisture from the amount of water that is used in papermaking. I will use the materials to teach my students how to make paper and use our handmade papers to make our own books. The books will be used for visual journaling which will foster writing, and creativity.

Your help will assist my students this year and in future years have the basic assets that we need to create handmade paper. Handmade paper can be used to draw on, paint, make books, and a variety of other projects.
