I want to begin a recycling project for the entire school. Students are allowed to have snacks during their recess. The adults usually drink at least one soda during their break or lunch. I have noticed that all the empty cans and bottles are thrown away. The trash cans are overflowing with materials that can easily be recycled. We can research how recycling can help our environment and how trash is harmful for our environment. The materials can be sold for recycling and the money used to purchase classroom supplies. Some materials can be recycled in the classroom to produce new and useful products. The students will use what they have learned at school and practice these skills at home and in the community. To accomplish my goal of learning how to care for our environment, I will need 12 recycle bins to be placed in various places throughout the campus. The contents will be collected daily and taken to the recycle center weekly. The weight or the count of the collected materials will be calculated weekly and presented in a monthly graph (displayed in the hall) reflecting our efforts. Contests will be held once a month. A certificate will be presented to the classroom with the greatest amount of materials collected for recycling. Certificates will be needed to award the class of the month. The class that has received the most certificates by the end of the school year will win a pizza party!! Our school ia a rural school in the eastern part of South Carolina. The school population Kindergarten through fourth grade. My class is a special education class. I teach all subjects for 1st through 5th grade levels. I look for projects that require my students to become actively involved. They need hands-on experiences. I believe the entire school will be able to benefit from this project as well as our community by living in a cleaner environment. The project will need 12 recycle bins to be placed around the school and certificates to be presented to a monthly contest winner.
