Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach scholars in a Title I TK/K-5 magnet school focused on empowering students through Balanced Literacy and the Digital Arts. Teachers at my school are deeply rooted in the surrounding community, where partnerships with local corporations and education support groups are all aligned to better help the scholars grow and learn.
Many of the scholars come from households where other languages are spoken, and grow their English skills solely through my school's literacy curriculum.
In order to best help my scholars succeed, I incorporate engaging instructional strategies to get them motivated to learn, which usually involves music, visual images and kinesthetic movement. Scholars at my school are excited to learn, and will continue to do so with high expectations, engaging materials, and a continued motivation to learn.
My Project
In an effort to go greener, the teachers and students at my school are implementing a school-wide recycling program. Unfortunately, we only have a couple recycling bins, which are constantly overflowing from classroom paper use and after lunch. Due to this overflow, all our recyclables that won't fit sadly go into the garbage. We teach our students the importance of recycling to take care of our earth, yet they are forced to throw away too many recyclables, simply because we have nowhere to put them!
With these recycling bins, we will be able to successfully implement our school-wide recycling program.
We will be able to outfit our hallway with more recycling bins, so everything recyclable will be recycled. The 4th and 5th grade students will take on the responsibility of emptying classroom recycling into these bins, and will also teach younger students to sort their garbage and recycling correctly. This will not only impress upon our students the importance of environmentalism, but also empower our older students to know they can be an important part of making change in their school community.
Thank you so much for helping us take this important step toward becoming a greener school!
